EYELID SURGERY
Drooping eye lid or bags and bulges around the eyes are developed because of lax eyelid skin and fat protrusion from septa and make one look older and sometimes even impaired the vision due to physical obstruction.
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is cosmetic procedure performed to correct eye lid sagging involves removal of excess skin and fat.
Blepharoplasty can be combined with facelift and brow lift.
Preoperatively patient is being evaluated for medical reasons for eye lid sagging such as allergy and thyroid disease, in these cases choice of treatment is medical rather than surgical.
Blepharoplasty can be done as day-care procedure under general anaesthesia. Incisions are placed over natural crease of upper eyelid and just below the eye lashes or transconjunctival over lower eyelid. The location of the incisions and the excellent healing ability of the eyelid skin always results in fine scars that are difficult to notice. Through these incisions excess skin, fat, or muscle are excised, extent of excision differs from one to other depending on the individual presentation. the incisions are closed in layers with absorbable suture. Bags and pouches are significantly reduced. Some patients experience an improved eyesight or peripheral vision.
Upper eyelid surgery: -
started by giving incisions in the natural crease region and removing, excess skin, fat, or muscle are, depending on the individual problem.
lower eyelid surgery: -
is tailored according to the underlying problem
- When the problem in the lower lid is only the bulging of fat, without excess skin, the lower lid blepharoplasty is carried out through transconjunctival blepharoplasty, it minimizes the risk of ectropion.
- If laxity exists in the lower eyelid skin and muscle, then a traditional lower eyelid blepharoplasty is performed.
- If the lower eyelid is extremely lax, tightening of the lid may be required to prevent postoperative drooping.
Post-operative care
- Apply an ice pack to minimize swelling and bruising
- Apply ointment and oral medication as prescribed by the surgeon
- Take rest
- Protect the eyes from sun and bright light
- Do not apply makeup for about 4-5 days after surgery
- clean the treated area and apply the eye-drops as guided by the surgeon.
The surgery provides beautiful and long-lasting results.
But as the aging process, gravity, weight loss, weight gain, and certain medical conditions drooping eyelids may recur again.
