Botox--Mechanism of action.

A wrinkle are formed perpendicular to the direction of muscle contraction located directly beneath it.

For example, vertical contraction of forehead muscles will cause horizontal wrinkles when they contract. Likewise, horizontal orientation of muscles between the eyebrows is responsible for midline vertical frown lines.

Botox is injected into muscle substance, where it blocks nerve impulses to those tissues. As the muscle activity is reduced, wrinkle disappear and a smoother look result.

Facial wrinkles without muscle contraction are not a good candidate for Botox. These lines are better treated by the dermal fillers.

Normally you would see improvement within a few days, but final appearance occurs at about 10-14 days.
