Vitiligo is caused by lack of pigment cells called melanin, causes loss of skin colour like patches. It can affect the skin on any part of body including hair and inside of the mouth (mucosa).
Cause of vitiligo is because melanocytes are either dying or stop functioning in people of all skin types, but it may be more prominently visible in darker skinned people. It makes them self-conscious even though it is not life threatening condition.
Symptoms
Vitiligo signs include patchy colour loss on skin, mucous membranes, retina and greying of hair all over body where ever the disease is involved.
usually it appears before age 20.
Depending on the distribution of vitiligo patches, it is classified as;--
- generalized vitiligo, the discoloured patches often progress similarly on bilaterally.
- segmental vitiligo,only on one part or one side of the body tends to have early onset, progress for a year or two, then stop.
- called localized (focal) vitiligo, only few areas of body are affected.
Causes
- Autoimmune disorder in which your immune system destroys the melanocytes in the skin
- Family history (heredity)
- A trigger events such as sunburns, stress or exposure to harmful chemicals
Complications
- Self councious and depressed.
- Sunburn and skin cancer
- Eye problems, such as inflammation of the iris (iritis)
- Hearing loss
In addition to clinical examination, personal history and family history and investigations like blood tests and skin biopsy will establish the diagnosis.
When to see a doctor
See your doctor if areas of your skin, hair or eyes lose colouring. Vitiligo has no cure. But treatment may help to stop or slow the discolouring process and return some colour to your skin.

Treatment
Treatment for vitiligo may restore colour to the affected skin. But it does not prevent continued loss of skin colour or a recurrence.
We advice you to first try self tanning products or makeup and consult dermatologist as Some treatments have serious side effects
Medications like
No drug can stop the process of vitiligo But some drugs, used alone or with light therapy, can help restore skin tone in some people.
- Creams that control inflammation. Applying a corticosteroid cream
- Medications that affect the immune system. Ointments containing tacrolimus or pimecrolimus (calcineurin inhibitors)
- Therapies
- Combining psoralen and light therapy
- Removing the remaining colour (depigmentation).
Surgery
Surgery may be an option if other modalities of treatment id failed or along with other modalities of treatment.
Skin grafting. In this procedure, vitiligo patches are prepared for grafting, small skin graft harvested from normal area and spread over raw area
Blister grafting. In this procedure, we create blisters on pigmented skin with special apparatus using suction, the top layer of the blisters are transplanted on pre prepared raw area over vitiligo patches.
Melanocyte transfer, in this procedure we harvest skin graft and mix it with special reagents so that melanocytes will be separated from the skin and transplant the melanocytes on to the raw area.
